How has this trip helped you spiritually?
Appreciation, accomplishment, and motivation.
This trip has helped me in many ways to see a little taste of the brotherhood worldwide. Especially getting the opportunity to attend the convention. The convention was a little highlight of my trip. I met so many people and all of the teens were so excited to meet others. Because of it being an English convention, a lot of them had already been there for need great work. It was considered “a mini international convention”. Seeing other teens with a love for Jehovah moved my heart so much. Some other people who touched my heart was the family that opened their home to me. I stayed there for a month and they were so loving and supportive. They helped me get out of my comfort zone and accomplish as much as I could in my short stay. They have become my spiritual family. I miss them all to an extreme and I truly appreciate them.
This trip was needed at just the right time. Jehovah made it accomplishable, it had been a goal since I was just about 14. Seeing a giant goal get checked off my list has majorly put things into perspective. Knowing that at my age I can do great things and I can achieve goals, was a huge realization.
I am now motivated to keep striving with new goals. It’s helped me get a stronger pioneer spirit and made me see just how strong Jehovah’s support is. I never felt closer to Jehovah than I do right now. Knowing that I did the right thing and put him first in my life. Especially leaving right after our new congregation was just formed, I used my new motivation to go up to others and introduce myself once I got back. I’ve been able to work with many in the congregation and get to know them personally.
What things did you like about the DR?
What I loved about the DR, as a place, is best explained in three points. First, the music. Music was everywhere and you couldn’t go anywhere without it playing in the background. People danced and would sing when they are happy. Second, the food! I enjoyed being able to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. I loved being able to go places and enjoy a meal with my spiritual family. Lastly, the brotherhood. I loved how supportive and caring they were. Accepting and really taking an interest in people who are traveling to visit. One thing I wanted to bring home with me was how they associate. They have parties and have funday Monday’s. (The beach was always nice!) But those by themselves helped me get to know the brothers and sisters.
What things did you NOT like about the DR?
There isn’t a lot that I disliked about the Dominican Republic. But coming from the Pacific Northwest you don’t see many stray animals, wandering kids, or people affected by poverty. The single men can also be a little vocal if you are from the states because they assume you are rich. But that’s an easy fix! Ladies, just wear a wedding ring and always keep a friend by your side. Other than that, all that’s left is there’s no spicy food! Next time I go, I definitely am bringing hot sauce.
Would you suggest other young ones to serve where the need is greater and why?
YES! Teens these days have a hard time seeing what’s not in front of them. Going on this trip has fueled a fire in me to keep on traveling; see the world more than I already do. Especially going to a place like the Dominican, I was able to open my mind to helping others in a third world country. How many teens can say that?? If the opportunity shows itself, take it. Once you’re an adult there isn’t much room for adventuring.
How has this trip helped you see that there is an actual "world" out there?
I used to have a list of places to visit here in the United States because I thought were achievable and more beneficial for myself personally. I’m not saying that’s wrong.. but going to the Dominican Republic I was able to see a different culture, climate, and all atmosphere that I would’ve never expected. You never know until you try it. Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with traveling, just like I did.
